Springbok Sevens playmaker Cecil Afrika will be out of action for three months after he underwent surgery on Sunday evening in a Stellenbosch medical clinic repair his broken jaw. Afrika was injured on Saturday during the Plate semi-final match against Wales.
Paul Treu, the South African Sevens coach, described the enforced absence of his star playmaker as a huge loss for the team.
“Cecil was in good form and grew in confidence with every match and he showed great bravery to stay on the field after the hit to still go on to score a try to help the team into the Plate final. On behalf of the team I want to wish him a speedy recovery and the medical team will obviously keep a close eye on his rehabilitation programme,” said Treu.
England leads the Series log with 44 points, followed by New Zealand (40), Samoa (36), Fiji (32) and South Africa in fifth spot on 24 points.
The next two tournaments take place on 4-5 February 2011 in Wellington and 12-13 February in Las Vegas.
